Managing Type II Diabetes: No Medication Added

At the age of 51 my dad was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. He instantly decided that he wanted to regulate his numbers without taking insulin or any type of medication. Being the strong minded person that he is, he instantly started making adjustments to his lifestyle to fit his new reality. He cleaned up his diet and began exercising more frequently.

Type II Diabetics have the opportunity to control their blood sugar levels without taking insulin. Their bodies produce insulin, but often not enough. The receptors that are normally supposed to absorb the excess glucose are resistant. This means the glucose stays in the blood stream, raising blood sugar. Taking insulin allows these receptors to work as they should, allowing the excess glucose into cells, lowering BSL. That is the most common treatment for diabetes, but what people don’t realize is that they can control these levels simply by taking better care of their bodies.

Anyone struggling with Type II Diabetes has the chance to manage their levels without insulin, but they have to be fully devoted. They must be stronger than their unhealthy cravings and motivated to exercise often. They also have to realize they will find some things that work for other people will not work for them alike. They have to figure out what amount of exercise will be good for them and what food works for them/does not work for them through trial and error. For example, my dad’s blood sugar levels do not react well with some fruits, these same fruits might be fine for another diabetic.

The positive side of all this is that this is mostly about mindset. If someone is willing to make the necessary changes and realize that it is for their benefit, they will do just fine with the changes they are making.

Before my dad’s diagnosis, my family didn’t pay much attention to the things we were eating. We went out to family dinners often and weren’t shy to eat fast food. We took vitamins and saw an iridologist thinking we were living a “healthy lifestyle” without realizing that our diet was completely contradicting that. Through this diagnosis, we have changed the way we live, and everyone has seen great improvements in our lifestyles. Although this diagnosis has not always been easy, it has been very worth it seeing our lives change for the better. This diagnosis has been a blessing in disguise for the majority of our family.
