Growing up we were always taught to be kind. We were taught to be “bucket fillers” never “bucket dippers.” Through the past few years I’ve really learned the importance of being kind no matter the circumstances, you never know what someone is going through. And at the same time, I feel like it’s really easy to go through the motions of each day without doing anything nice for anyone. That’s why I’ve made a conscious effort to do something for someone else each day. Whether it’s smiling at someone in the hallway, paying for the order behind me in the drive through, or complimenting someone I don’t talk to often, if I can do one thing a day to make someone else smile, my day was successful.
Now let’s talk about grandparents, aren’t they the best? They deserve the world. I’ve always thought so highly of my grandparents. I’m so thankful for all that they do for me and my family, and all that they have done throughout my life. So as a thank you, I prepared a basket for them. I filled it with their favorite snacks and brought it to their house when I visited them. I know this isn’t close to being enough to repay them for all they have done for me, but seeing the smiles on their faces made me realize it was enough for them. It made their day, maybe their whole week. It allowed them to forget all of the stress in their lives for a minute and be thankful for right then.

The purpose of telling this story is not for me to be praised for what I did for them, that means nothing to me. But instead, it’s to show how great it felt not only for them to have something done for them, but for me to be able to see how grateful they were for that random act of kindness. It took me maybe 10 minutes to go to the store and get stuff around for the basket, but it’s something they will remember and cherish for a while.
Please, always remember that small actions can go a long way. Smile at the stranger passing by, compliment that shirt that you really like (it’s okay that you don’t know that person wearing it), and overall just be a kind person. Be that positive person our world desperately needs. It doesn’t take much to do something nice for someone, and I promise you it’ll be worth seeing them smile. It’ll make you smile, too.
